Protecting Data is Everyone's Job

I hope you are having a prosperous start to 2013 and have laid the foundation of your office to experience great success the rest of this year.

MRED spends a great deal of time thinking about data security issues. We know your valuable content is on deposit with us. We take every reasonable measure to insure your listing data at MRED remains in the hands of those who will care for it properly.

Recently, we have received reports of companies asking their real estate agent customers to provide them with access to listing data, either by sharing a password or by download. While that may not seem like a major felony, keep in mind the only listings a managing broker may distribute to a third party are their own. AND - you should never, ever share your MLS password with anyone, even a company you hire.

When vendors provide services to our real estate professionals and need listing data, they are required to enter into a Licensing Agreement directly with MRED. MRED takes steps to make sure that listing data is protected, and we help the company with MRED's terminology, as not every MLS across the country uses the same terminology and fields in the same way.

Fortunately, situations involving data misuse are relatively easy to discover and are ferreted out fairly quietly. However, even one day of exposure like this is one day too much. We would prefer to spend more time improving our products and services, and less time chasing down vendors.

Please take a minute to review this information with your agents in order to insure that any arrangements of this nature are NOT occurring in your office. If they are, simply instruct the vendor to get in touch with Richard Torp at MRED (richard.torp@MREDLLC.com or 630-955-2750) and we'll work together to fix the problem ASAP.

One more thing. MRED is putting on one of the great real estate events of 2013 - MREDpalooza. The details are included in today's eNewsletter. I urge you to let everyone in your firm (agents and staff) know about this and encourage them to go. The level of real estate information and training will be off the charts, and admission is FREE. I look forward to seeing you there!

Quotes from our Owners:

“Purchasing a preferred share of MRED has been a huge value to me and our company. The main benefit to me is being able to serve on the Board and vote for other shareholders to serve. Serving on the Board gives you a chance to take part in decisions that will shape the future of the MLS.
-
Jim Nelson, Jr., Broker/Owner, RE/MAX Suburban

“Owning a Preferred Unit gives you a vote and the ability to participate in the election process. Your representative can bring your ideas for improvement to the table. I believe with so many factors affecting our data, its distribution and its security, having the right to have your thoughts heard through your choice in representation makes sense. -Chuck Dinolfo, Century 21 Pro-Team

“After over 30 years in the real estate business and having been involved with four different MLS conversions, I find MRED a breath of fresh air, combining state of the art technology with a skilled and helpful staff. And that's why I purchased a Preferred Unit.” -Tom Guttilla, Broker/Co-Owner, Coldwell Banker Today's Realtors
